As parents, caregivers, and mentors, one of the most important gifts we can give our children is a strong foundation of faith. But what does that look like in practice? How do we help our little ones grow a personal, lasting relationship with God? At Kaycie’s Corner, we believe it starts with introducing them to Jesus, nurturing prayer, engaging with Scripture, and walking alongside them as a living example of faith.
Jesus: The Cornerstone
Jesus is the cornerstone of our faith. In construction, a cornerstone is the first stone set in a building, the one that everything else is built upon. Similarly, Jesus is the foundation of our lives. When children understand who He is, they have something firm and unshakable to build their faith upon.
Scripture Inspiration:
Isaiah 28:16 – “I am placing a foundation stone…a precious cornerstone that is safe to build on. Whoever believes need never be shaken.”
Ephesians 2:20 – “Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets. The cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself.”
Introducting them to Jesus:
Read age-appropriate books like Getting to Know Jesus for Little Ones by Brad and Kathy Bright.
Share stories and simple truths: God loves us, sin separates us, and Jesus is the way.
Prayer: Building a Personal Connection
Prayer is the heartbeat of a relationship with God. Just like any relationship, communication is essential. Teaching children to pray helps them connect with God personally and understand His love.
Scripture Inspiration:
Matthew 6:6-13 – Jesus teaches how to pray thoughtfully and sincerely, not just repeating words.
Teaching them to Pray:
Model prayer daily and invite children to join.
Keep it simple; remind them that prayer is simply talking with God
Explore books like What Happens When I Talk to God? by Stormie Omartian.
Tip: Encourage them to talk to God about real-life experiences, fears, joys, and questions. Prayer is a conversation, not a lecture.
The Bible: Knowing God and Ourselves
Knowing God comes through spending time with Him in Scripture. The more children engage with God’s Word, the more they understand who He is—and who they are as His creation.
Scripture Inspiration:
Deuteronomy 6:4-9 – “Repeat them again and again to your children…write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”
Helping them Engage with Scripture:
Hear it: Read scripture aloud and discuss what stands out.
Say it: Talk about Scripture throughout the day.
Read it: Set aside time to read with them or have them read to you.
Write it: Display verses on walls, fridges, or in journals.
Apply it: Let children creatively express Scripture through drawing, acting, journaling, or building.
You: A Living Example
Children learn faith not only through teaching but through observation. How you walk with God matters. Show them, tell them, and help them grow.
Scripture Inspiration:
1 Timothy 4:12 – “Be an example in what you say, in your love, faith, and purity.”
Romans 10:14-15 – Children need guidance to hear, believe, and call on God.
Your Faith in Action:
Show them: Let them see you pray, read the Bible, and live out your faith.
Tell them: Share stories of God’s work in your life and family.
Help them: Support their spiritual growth and provide opportunities to learn.
Why a Strong Foundation Matters
A strong foundation of faith equips children to:
Keep their souls anchored amid life’s challenges.
Be prepared for the “whens” of life.
Live a life worthy of their calling.
You Don’t Have to Do It All
Faith-building is a journey, not a checklist. You don’t need to know every answer. Give yourself grace when questions arise or moments feel challenging, and ask God to guide you along the way.
